ITINERARY:

DAY 1

Your journey begins with a two hour flight to White Cliffs, a small outback town in New South Wales well known for opal mining and being so hot that the locals live underground in 'dugouts' to escape the blistering heat. An aerial view of the town looks abstract, like a thousand of tiny ant holes, on closer view they are actually thousands of open holes drilled by hopeful Opal miners. We lunch at the Red Earth Opal Cafe before heading underground for an Opal Mine Tour to reach a depth of 45 feet.

ACCOMMODATION: White Cliffs Underground Motel, White Cliffs

DAY 2

We depart White Cliffs after a leisurely morning and head towards the Oodnadatta Track where we make a stop at the Mutonia Sculpture Park at Marree. Here you will see the most unusual sculptures displaying the humour and inventiveness of outback Australians, be sure to bring your camera! We then depart for William Creek, another town on the Oodnadatta Track that puts the meaning into 'the middle of nowhere'.

DAY 3

Next we journey to one of Australia's most unusual places, the dusty lunar landscape of Coober Pedy. Along the way overflying the lowest natural point in Australia, at approximately 15 m below sea level - a phenomenal sight, Lake Eyre. Check-in to your underground hotel in the centre of town complete with underground bar and cafe before taking a Down n' Dirty tour where you will be supplied with a hard hat, torch and handpick to get down and get dirty fossicking for your own fortune. The evening is yours to explore this interesting town and dine at Umberto's restaurant.
