In the Eyre!

Situated deep in the South Australian desert, some 700km north of Adelaide; the untainted whiteness of Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre is an icon of nature sitting squarely at the beating heart of outback Australia.

As Australia's largest salt lake, this vast, ancient salt pan covers a massive area of approximately 9,500 square kilometres and reaches the lowest depth on the continent of approximately 15 metres below sea level.

Due to its massive breadth, taking to the air to see the immensity and complexity of this geological feature is the best choice to capture and experience the lake's many intricacies.

One of the most popular ways to see Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre is from the air, where a breathtaking new world of texture, pattern and colour is revealed. Like Uluru, Lake Eyre - Kati Thanda, is a bewitching masterpiece that plays different shows at different times of the day, transforming in colour from dawn to dusk.

Lake Eyre - Kati Thanda is aesthetically beautiful year-round but Autumn and Winter are an especially spectacular time of year to visit, as heavy monsoonal rains from Queensland travel for months down the vast drainage basin and the barren, cracked earth blooms with abundant colour and life. Flocks of migratory birds arrive and richly coloured algae flourish to transform the salt crusted white hues into a pink and orange wonderland.

Another wondrous feature carved into the outback landscape in this region is the mysterious 'Marree Man'. This enormous figure of an Aboriginal man hunting with a boomerang lies on a plateau of arid land, approximately 60 kilometers west of Marree. The modern geoglyph is so large that it is viewable from space, yet not a single witness can attest to its creation and to this day, its creator and the reason for its construction remain unknown.

Travel to this irresistible wide-open space of the South Australian outback and take in the remote communities of William Creek, Marree, Coober Pedy and the Flinders Rangers.
